Final ride for the ride500

Today we did our final ride for the ride 500. It's been such a privilege to be able to complete this ride in honour of Mum.  She cared so deeply about helping others, and was so honoured to be the NSW ride500 ambassador. We'll forever be astounded by her positivity, strength and kindness. 
We wish she was here with us, but we will always ride, kayak, walk and watch the pelicans with Mum in our thoughts 

Rides with Dad! 27 September

I rode with Dad to Macquarie Rivulet, and then to Shellharbour. We didn't let the sun going down stop us and rode around the park at night near the lights!

Ride to Kurnell!! 25th September

Scott and I rode from Taren Point to Kurnell and back today! Another new ride we've discovered!

Ride with Dad on the 5 bridges ride! 20 September

I took Dad around the 5 bridges ride in our local area! 

Ride around a different Lake! 17 September

We were up in the Central Coast this weekend, and rode around Tuggerah Lake today! It was a fabulous ride, can highly recommend it! We've loved being able to find all of these new areas to bike ride. 

Biggest ride yet around the lake! 11 September

We rode 61km around Lake Illawarra today! This included a stop for lunch where we met some lovely people. It was a fantastic ride with Dad showing us lots of additional riding paths near the Lake that we'd never seen before. There's always something new to be seen!

Ride for Anne - 10th September

The cancer council team in Wollongong organised a ride for Anne day on the 10th September, thank you so much! It was so beautiful to see all the people who came along that were inspired by Mum, and it was such a beautiful tribute to Mum's legacy. 

Ride after work

We rode after work to the Minnamurra river! Mum has a fantastic area, we just went straight out the door after work and went for a fantastic ride. First along the beach, then past Shell Cove and through to Minnamurra river. 

5 Bridges Ride

We rode around the Sutherland Shire today!

We did the Georges River 5 Bridges Loop, which included crossing the Woronora river.

The scenery was fantastic, and we had fun exploring new areas. It was great to see all the cycle paths in the Sutherland Shire, and a fantastic weekend activity! Mum loved coming up to visit our new area, in particular she enjoyed kayaking on the Woronora river and seeing the Como Pleasure Grounds.

Getting out before the rain!

We went for a fantastic ride to Macquarie Rivulet and through Albion Park with Dad, and the weather was absolutely beautiful. About an hour after we got back though it poured! We felt exceptionally grateful for getting our ride in that morning! 

Mum was always making the most of a good day to get outside and go for a ride or a kayak, although she never let the weather stop her either!

Riding at home

Today we had work, but luckily we've got two exercise bikes at home! Mum always talked about getting the balance between work, leisure and rest, and the importance of exercise. 

A beautiful day to be out bike riding

We rode to Jamberoo with Dad, a new ride for us! The weather was beautiful, such a great day to be out. The view of Minnamurra river on the way home was absolutely stunning. Mum loved riding to Minnamurra and kayaking along the Minnamurra river, so it's a special place for us.

Wonderful memories of life's fantastic journey

We rode with Dad and Mark today! We had such a fun time, riding to Barrack Point, a spot where Mum loved to stop and appreciate the beautiful views. 
It's been such a great journey, we have so many wonderful memories from riding with Mum, and for Mum. Mum cared so deeply for this cause of raising much needed funds for cancer research. In total, Mum has raised over $48,000 for the Cancer Council so far. She was so humbled by the incredible kindness and generosity of all her friends, family, and even those she didn't know. 

Mum got so much enjoyment and strength from being out on her bike, and we will continue to ride in her honour and carry her with us. 

Fun happy times

We rode with Dad to Kiama and back. We enjoyed looking at the Kiama blowhole and having lunch there. Mum and Dad enjoyed riding with their friends to Kiama in the morning and having breakfast before riding home. It's an absolutely stunning ride, with a few hills along the way!

The importance of exercise

Mum loved exercise, and getting out everyday. She also loved sharing activities with others. We will always think of Mum when we are out bike riding, kayaking and bushwalking. Today we rode one of Mum's favourite rides to Macquarie Rivulet. The scenery on this ride is simply stunning. Mum was always so excited to share this ride with us. 

"I believe that the excercise I have done during my lifetime has extended my life. I have cycled over 5000km and kayaked over 1500km. Exercise makes you stronger and more resilient" - Anne   

Ride to Shell Cove - enjoying Mum and Dad's local area

We rode to Shell Cove on the 16th August. Mum enjoyed watching the progress of the Shell Cove Marina. Nearby is Bass Point, another place Mum loved visiting. This ride also goes past Warilla beach which Mum absolutely loved. She loved living in Lake Illawarra. Mum got a lot of strength from being out in nature.

Family ride around the lake

We rode around the lake today, the weather was spectacular. Anne loved living next to Lake Illawarra and rode around it frequently. She enjoyed observing the constantly changing colours of the lake. 

Macquarie Rivulet Ride and Pelicans

Went for a beautiful ride to Macquarie Rivulet, this is one of Anne's favourite rides, and we were lucky enough to see eight pelicans on the jetty. Anne always loved observing the pelicans on her bike and kayak.

Riding around the lake with Anne's family and friends. The day was beautiful, Anne would have loved it. 

Live as if you're living

Sadly, Anne passed away on the 2nd of August. She always lived life to the fullest and cared so much for others. She was so deeply committed to the cause of ending cancer forever, and she was so honoured to be the NSW ride500 ambassador. Her determination was inspiring to all that knew her and she still rode on the Friday and Saturday before she passed on Tuesday. 
Anne will be with all the people she touched forever. Her family will continue the ride500 for her this year in her honour.  

GREAT FRIENDS TO CYCLE WITH

After the rain it was a beautiful weekend. Great to be with friends that  enjoy  cycling
They keep me safe by being there   to help me and keeping a safe distance .
The lake  scenery stunning as usual  and I love looking at the different views and  listening to the birds

AMAZING SUPPORT AND KINDNESS

Amazing support and kindness helps me so much. I didn’t cycle on the weekend . Instead my school friends several that I have known for a long time had an afternoon tea for me to help raise funds for cancer research via my ride 500 page.
It was truly a big help and I loved catching up with my fiends , several of whom  we started together in kindergarten 57 years ago and through to year 12 , plus I met friends of their’s who were equally friendly and kind. Thanks very much. I feel very spoilt and loved being with these wonderful friends. Thanks to all of you for your kind generosity and delicious food.

LOVE CYCLING

I haven’t cycled the last couple of days due to pain and vomiting from my cancer.
I’m keen to get back on my bike this weekend . I have started cycling for ride 500 and have so far cycled 230 kms. 
Since starting chemotherapy I have  cycled over 5000kms
This year in January and February I  was in hospital for over 3 weeks. I had a gangrenous, cancerous very swollen gallbladder  which  was close to rupture and had caused sepsis.
It was very painful and I had to stay I n hospital on intravenous antibiotics for the sepsis to settle before surgery and more pain relief .
The surgeons that operated on me were fantastic. In fact I had 2 operations as my Portacath needed replacing.
The infection control Doctor saw me every day for 23 days and the surgeons did also
These wonderful doctors saved my life
The Doctors did their bit so I needed to do mine . From the day after surgery I got up about 4 or 6 times per day to walk around the ward.
Again I could have died but didn’t 
I wasn’t able to cycle for a couple of months due to surgery so I walked.
Now  as I cycle along the bike track I feel so proud not only to be the NSW ambassador for ride 500 but to be alive and loving nature and cycling

A Great Ride With A Great Friend

Having a cycling buddy is very enjoyable and adds a lovely social time to an already enjoyable ride and we weren’t bothered by the wind enjoying it behind us on the return ride

SEEING THE BEST IN EACH DAY NOT THE WORST

My name is Anne Royters and I am 62 years old. I feel really privileged to be the New South Wales Cancer Council ambassador for this year’s Ride 500.

It has not been an easy journey to get here. On Christmas Eve 2019 I was diagnosed with stage 4B ovarian cancer and possibly had only six weeks to live if chemotherapy did not work.

From being a healthy person I was suddenly flung into the world of the chronically ill constantly at medical appointments, scans and hospitals.

It has been a big challenge with 15 operations, 11 trips to hospital by ambulance and over 35 doses of chemotherapy.

Last year I cycled for Ride 500. I didn’t think I would be able to complete it because my cancer was spreading and had spread into my liver and other places and during the ride I had eight days in hospital trying to get the pain under control. I managed to cycle 1000 km and raised over $23,000.

My cancer continues to spread and is extensive in my liver, pelvis and abdomen.

I’m determined to do my best to cycle for Ride 500 this year.

I do have pain from my cancer and Palliative Care are helping me manage so I can do some cycling and other things I love. I want to live as if I’m living not dying and see the best in every day not the worst.

My goal is to raise funds for much-needed cancer research and care of the needs of patients with Cancer and their families.
